Man City and Manchester United’s last meeting at Old Trafford was ‘boring’ was both sides were ‘scared’, says Pep Guardiola, who believes derby isn’t his side’s biggest game

Pep Guardiola had some harsh words to say about Manchester City’s last match against Manchester United.

The Spaniard was speaking to the media ahead of the match, which is live on talkSPORT, and played down the importance of it despite his side being five points behind Chelsea.

Guardiola came out in a fiery mood ahead of the Manchester derby

Having lost ground in the title race last weekend after losing 2-0 at home to Crystal Palace, Guardiola knows his side cannot afford to drop any more points.

However, they are up against a United side who are desperate to avoid a repeat of their last home game when they were embarrassed by Liverpool.

“I don’t feel it,” when asked if the derby means more around the club.

“I wake up in the morning, I’m here to this bubble, then 10-14 hours here and after go home, I’m not in the restaurants, I don’t know the atmosphere.

“I can imagine for both sides it’s normal. The emotion, try to win the derby and do well. I have to be cold. To know exactly what we have to do, to do our best. No more than that.

“We did good games against them, maybe not good results. Except one game last season, it was a little bit boring, both teams were a little bit scared.

“They were out of the Champions League, playing five at the back in Leipzig and they could not win the Europa League. We were not in a good moment either.

“They are so good up front, now [with] Cristiano Ronaldo they’re even better. We know the quality they have, in general we make a good game in the Carabao Cup.

“Good game there and at home. We were ourselves when we played against them – sometimes we win, sometimes we lose.”

And when asked if the derby is the biggest game for City, Guardiola said: “I don’t think so, maybe it is for some people.

“We try to treat every game with importance. Of course derbies are special for many sentimental issues but we want the same results.”
